MONMOUTH, Ill. – Monmouth College’s swim team racked up their third consecutive dual meet sweep with a men’s and women’s win at Millikin Saturday. With wins in both relay events, the Fighting Scots women rolled by the Big Blue 105-85. Monmouth’s men had a bit tougher battle, but edged Millikin73-66. The 4x200 medley relay team of Dani Gordon, Amanda Zaidel, Krysta Sparks and Colleen Zumpf put the women ahead in the first event, swimming a 2:01.29 for the win, just six one-hundredths off their season-best. Zumpf also swam a leg on the women’s meet-ending 4x200 freestyle relay with Rachel Holm, Kendra Kuehl and Erin Willhite. The foursome won by more than 12 seconds in 1:49.45. Willhite added an individual win, touching first in the 50 freestyle with a 26.54, nearly two seconds ahead of Gordon in second place with a 28.23. Gordon earned a win, taking the 100 backstroke in 1:08.82. Kuehl finished a full minute ahead of the field in the 500 freestyle with a season-best 5:48.29. Sparks edge Zaidel for the win in the 100 breaststroke. Sparks’ season-best 1:13.40 was less than two seconds ahead of her teammate’s 1:15.05. Monmouth’s men also opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay. Gabe Baginski, Zach Heilman, James Corbeil and Joe Testolin out-touched Millikin in 1:48.18, just 63-hundredths faster than the Big Blue. Monmouth finished 1-2 in the 200 freestyle where Baginski clocked a 1:49.26 for the win ahead of Testolin’s 1:56.21. Baginski also took the win in the 100 freestyle. His season-best 49.33 was just 14-hundredths off his career-best. Josh Dunn also picked up a pair of wins while swimming in back-to-back events. He took top honors in the 200 individual medley with a 2:09.70 and immediately followed that race with a 57.76 to win the 100 butterfly. Brett Dunn rounded out the wins, taking the 100 backstroke. His time of 1:00.99 was nearly six seconds ahead of the runner up and 84-hundredths off his season-best time. Both Dunns, Testolin and Corbeil ended the meet by swimming an exhibition race in the 200 freestyle relay. The quartet finished in 1:35.12, more than a second faster than the Big Blue who took the first place points. The Scots travel to Valparaiso this coming Saturday for a meet with Valpo’s men and Butler’s men’s and women’s squads before hosting their final home meet on Feb. 4. |
