MONMOUTH, Ill. – Four nationally ranked performances highlighted the Monmouth College men’s and women’s track teams’ season debut. Monmouth’s women won the nine-team Sol Butler Classic at the University of Dubuque while the men placed second. Rachel Bowden, Allison Devor and DeAndre Smith got off to a good start as each turned in a top 10 performance. Devor won both the shot put and weight throw with nationally ranked throws. Her shot put of 45’3-1/2” won by more than 5’ and was just one inch off her personal record. The throw ranks her second in the nation. The junior did one better in the weight throw where she won with the nation’s best throw at 56’6-3/4”. Bowden was less than three seconds shy of her personal-best in winning the 800-meter run. The junior clocked a 2:20.25, ranking her third nationally. Smith took top honors in the men’s shot put while making his mark on the national rankings. Smith’s toss of 50’2” was more than 4’ farther than the runner up and ranks him seventh nationally. While Devor was at or near the top of the national rankings, she had Monmouth company in both of her events. Raven Robinson and Amanda Streeter placed 3-4 in the shot put with marks of 38’5-1/2” and 38’4-3/4”, respectively. Streeter and Robinson traded places in the weight throw where Streeter threw 47’6-1/2” and Robinson reached 46’3-1/4”. It was also crowded in the triple jump where Bailey Jackson and MacKinsey Marquith were in the top three. Jackson won the event with a jump of 34’0” and Marquith was third at 33’0-1/2”. Jackson also placed first in the long jump at 16’10-1/2”. High jumper Emily Tysma rounded out the women’s field event wins. She was declared the winner by the judge’s decision with a height of 5’3” after two women tied with that mark. The Scots picked up more points in a pair of distance races. A personal-best in the 3,000 earned Tori Beaty first place honors. The junior’s time of 11:16.19 was 19 seconds faster than the runner up. Alyssa Edwards finished second in the mile at 5:40.80 Hurdler Alexa Allen picked up where she left off last year. The sophomore broke the tape in the 55-meter hurdles, clocking an 8.75. Monmouth’s women’s distance medley relay had the time to beat in the season’s inaugural meet. Bowden and Beaty teamed with Marlee Lane and Brittney Frazier to clock a 13:25.46 to win by nearly 45 seconds. The 4x200 team of Jackson, Allen, Kimarri Campbell and Kenzie Payton ran to a third place finish. Their time of 1:50.84 was just over a second back of the runner up. On the men’s side, Smith added a fourth place finish in the weight throw. His mark of 50’7-1/2” was less than an inch shy of his personal best. It was a 1-2 finish in the triple jump where newcomer Michel Massamba placed firth and Karston Anderson was second. Massamba’s effort of 44’0-3/4” just outdistanced Anderson’s 43’11-3/4”. Monmouth’s men also fared well in the vertical jumps where Steven Andris opened his collegiate career with a win. The freshman cleared 13’1-1/2” to win the pole vault. Senior Matt Hassler tied for the lead in the high jump, but was declared the runner up by the judge’s decision with a height of 6’4-3/4”. The Scots turned in strong showing in the 55-meter events. Anderson captured first in the 55 hurdles, breaking the tape in 7.93. Kiante Green placed second in the 55 dash with a time of 6.59. A freshman and a senior were 2-3 in the 400 dash. Newcomer Raimius Foulkes took second in 51.80, just one one-hundredth behind the winner. Shane Reschke was third in 52.47. In the mile, Jon Welty ran a 4:46.30. The time placed him third, just five seconds out of second place. Green and Anderson added Eric Brown and Brian Sullivan to capture the top spot in the 4x200 relay. The foursome ran a meet-best 1:31.49. Garrett Daniel teamed with Foulkes, Reschke and Brown in finishing second in the 4x400 relay. They were just two seconds off the pace at 3:30.32. Daniel was joined by distance specialists Jake Barr, Brian Daly and Matt Gatlin in the distance medley relay where they placed fourth. The quartet turned in an 11:11.32. The Scots will host the four-team Midwest Invitational this Saturday. The meet begins at 10:45 in Monmouth’s Huff Athletic Center. |
