A Galesburg man is facing several charges, including attempted murder, after an incident that occurred over the weekend. Police say that 46-year old Sterling M. Nicholson was arrested Saturday after allegedly severely beating 31-year old Mary D. Cannon. Police reported to a home located in the 200 block of South Whitesboro Street when an ex-boyfriend called police to report that Cannon had been beaten. Police found that both of Cannon's eyes were swollen shut and both were blackened. She was also found to have bruising to her face and head. She was taken to Cottage Hospital to be treated for injuries that had been suffered from the beating. Police later located Nicholson at a friend’s house and was questioned. He was then arrested on charges of attempted murder, aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm. He was then taken to the Knox County Jail.
